We are thrilled to announce the fifteen finalists for Opium9's 250-Word Bookmark Contest (judged by Andrew Sean Greer). The issue, which will release in early-November, will feature the winner and nine other of these bookmarks, while a handful will appear online as a run-up to the issue's release. The winner will be announced the day the issue releases.
We'd also like to congratulate every writer who entered, as this was, by far, the best crop of contest entries that were ever submitted for an Opium contest (and more impressive, the quality held up over the course of reading a record number of entries). Amazing what people can do with 250 words.
So, below are the 15 finalists and the title of their story (listed in completely random order):
Clark Hays, Trench Fight
Sean Murphy, Funny
Kyle Davis, An Aeronautical End
F.J. Bergmann, Synecdoche
MK Chavez, The Mandrake
Aimee Mepham, Excuse Me
Lydia Fitzpatrick, When His Parents Came to Visit
Eileen G'Sell, Closure
Je Banach, A Different Animal
Kevin Leahy, Beachcombers
Lisa A. Levy, After the Breakdown
Chris West, Young Karl Marx
Brett Rosenblatt, Ugly People
Daniel Grandbois, Boxes
M.E. Brown, The Divorce
Also, we'll be featuring a load of the contest entries in the coming weeks, as so many were so good—paring the lot down to 15 finalists was very, very difficult. If you submitted a story and your entry is marked "Recommended for Acceptance" there's still a chance your piece will appear on Opium's .com. Sit tight, and we'll let you know soon!
